I recently read a comment from an author guest posting on another site that stated “Thanks for your input [name edited out]. I really don’t wish to turn the article into a debate.”
Really? If you want to only allow your own opinions, maybe you should write static pages and turn your comments off. In my opinion, having a blog, opens your opinions up to debate across the blogosphere. I guess I just don’t understand that concept of writing an article and then not accepting that there may be other opinions. If you are going to open yourself up for scrutiny and criticism, then you should be ready to handle it. On the same note, if someone challenges you in the comments, it is your right to rebuttal. I started this site as a hobby to write about my experiences as a blogger for business and it has really taken off on me. The response I have gotten from my colleagues has been unbelievable!
New Site:
The new site is being turned over to me this weekend, the title is Hot Blog Tips, which I think will work much better for this niche I am writing in. Read the rest of this entry
I like to create link posts sharing some of my favorite posts by my colleagues in the blogging world, and as I wrote about previously on my Weekend Reading article, I like to present the links a little differently using the links in the body of the article describing each article and using keywords for the links.
I think this helps both the reader here to find the articles they want to click through to, as well as helping the blogger I am linking to because the link falls into the body of the text instead of in a long list and I believe Google weighs links in the body of the text as more valuable. I was over on Wassupblog this morning catching up on some reading and got into a discussion with Sire about a “target market”, so I decided to write about it this morning. I really love it when you get ideas for articles from commenting and replying to comments on blogs (Thanks Sire!).
Personal Blogs:
If you have a personal blog, then you don’t really have a target market, so this article won’t really matter but you should read it anyway just in case you decide to take blogging seriously and make a business out of it!
Blogging As A Business:
Most bloggers start blogging because they want to “make money online“. I on the other hand, started blogging to promote an existing business I already had. Either way, if you want to make money at blogging, I think you must treat it like any other business. That means you have to have a marketing strategy for your blog. Part of your marketing plan should include figuring out who the “target market” is going to be. Read the rest of this entry
When I first started blogging it was to promote a company I was a sales manager for. That company was a fence contracting business and I was looking for different ways to bring more customers in the door. A good friend of mine suggested I start a blog and write about fencing.
Later that year I decided to start my own fence contracting business and was going to need a website for it. I contacted that friend that suggested I start a blog and asked him to design a site for me on Wordpress. He was happy to design my site. Since I had already been blogging on a free wordpress site, I already new my way around the admin page of a wordpress site so the transition was easy. Read the rest of this entry
So today is Sunday, I took it easy. Ok, that is a flat out lie, I have been working on making my computer a local server so I can test sites I am working on, so it was very frustrating to say the least. I figured out how to make my computer a server and host sites locally for testing, but I am having other complications and had to quit before I lost it…
After taking a break and watching some football, I decided to go through my Google Reader and comment on some posts, which I sometimes like more than writing an article (some of you probably know that from the long comments I leave on your blogs!). I read a ton of blogs, for many reasons, but mainly because I like to comment on blogs. On my way through the reader, I came across a couple of blogs that have installed an annoying pop up that begs you to sign up for their email newsletter (or something else, I don’t know because I immediately close the pop-up) and it furthered my frustration, so here I am taking it out on you . This week I wrote 2 guest posts, and it was really fun! I used to be one of those that thought “why would I give my content to someone else?”
There are many reasons to guest post, but I think to most important one is to work together with bloggers in your niche. Instead of always thinking of them as competition, we need to think of each other as colleagues. Read the rest of this entry
