There is a common theory that you must go out and comment on blogs and forums so you can get more links to your site and this will somehow increase your PageRank or rankings in SERP’s. While this is not completely untrue, it is not a main factor that you should be worrying about.
I used to think this was the way to get PR and higher rankings in the SERP’s and would continuously work on getting backlinks in this manner. It even got to the point that I was spending more time commenting than I was writing my own content. I have been testing and re-testing ways to get better SERP’s for my products and services sites over the last two years, and my findings are that these links, while they are not useless, serve a different purpose. When I first started blogging it was to promote a company I was a sales manager for. That company was a fence contracting business and I was looking for different ways to bring more customers in the door. A good friend of mine suggested I start a blog and write about fencing.
Later that year I decided to start my own fence contracting business and was going to need a website for it. I contacted that friend that suggested I start a blog and asked him to design a site for me on Wordpress. He was happy to design my site. Since I had already been blogging on a free wordpress site, I already new my way around the admin page of a wordpress site so the transition was easy. Read the rest of this entry
I see bloggers come and go everyday, some of you reading this post will not be blogging next year, or even next month. There are literally 1000’s of articles on how to make money blogging, or how to make money online. I make money online, but it is in different ways than what these articles are talking about. I don’t make money on adsense, affiliates, or text links. As a matter of fact, I will be removing most advertising on this site because I just think it clutters up my site and is taking away from the content. On top of that, this site doesn’t get enough search traffic yet, and lets face it, other bloggers do not click on ads! The money I make online is from services and products. So today is Sunday, I took it easy. Ok, that is a flat out lie, I have been working on making my computer a local server so I can test sites I am working on, so it was very frustrating to say the least. I figured out how to make my computer a server and host sites locally for testing, but I am having other complications and had to quit before I lost it…
After taking a break and watching some football, I decided to go through my Google Reader and comment on some posts, which I sometimes like more than writing an article (some of you probably know that from the long comments I leave on your blogs!). I read a ton of blogs, for many reasons, but mainly because I like to comment on blogs. On my way through the reader, I came across a couple of blogs that have installed an annoying pop up that begs you to sign up for their email newsletter (or something else, I don’t know because I immediately close the pop-up) and it furthered my frustration, so here I am taking it out on you . This week I wrote 2 guest posts, and it was really fun! I used to be one of those that thought “why would I give my content to someone else?”
There are many reasons to guest post, but I think to most important one is to work together with bloggers in your niche. Instead of always thinking of them as competition, we need to think of each other as colleagues. Read the rest of this entry
There are plenty of Link Roundups and “Mashup” articles floating around these days (I am including a couple in my post) and usually these articles are a list of links with titles and possibly a short description.
I like link roundup articles for a couple of reasons. First, because it is all about Blogger Luv. Linking out to other bloggers helps promote someone else (unselfish) while helping readers to discover a blog they may not be reading.
Usually theses articles are either a list of just links, or a list of links with a couple of words to describe it. I want to try something different with my list and write more like a standard article with more text surrounding the links I am sharing giving a description of the article and why you should read it.I believe in content links have more weight as far as showing “trust” than just your regular list of links (just my theory), and even if it doesn’t I hope it will read easier. Some of you that read my articles every day have probably noticed that I have been making frequent changes to the design and layout of this site (as well as a couple of my other sites).
